Overview
About This Fishery
Almaden Reservoir sits in the foothills south of San Jose, bordered by the 4,163-acre Almaden Quicksilver County Park. The park's name tells you everything about the mercury history here — the New Almaden mine was one of the most productive quicksilver mines in North America, and that legacy means a hard Do Not Eat advisory on all fish. But the fishing itself can be excellent.
No boats or swimming are permitted, making this a pure bank fishing experience. The shoreline trail gives anglers good access around much of the lake. Largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill are the consistent producers. Rainbow trout are stocked in cooler months by CDFW, adding a welcome seasonal option.
The surrounding park is genuinely beautiful — trails wind through oak woodlands, and wildlife sightings are common. It's a great spot to combine a hike with a few hours of fishing. Expect solitude on weekdays; local neighborhoods fill the park on weekends.
What's in the Water
Target Species
The primary target. Fish rocky points and weed edges at dawn and dusk with jigs, crankbaits, or soft plastics.
Solid population in deeper coves. Small jigs and grubs near submerged structure produce well.
Plentiful in the shallows — a great option for beginners or when the bass are being stubborn.
Active at night along the bottom near the dam. Cut bait and stink bait are the go-to presentations.
Stocked seasonally in winter and spring by CDFW. Check the current fish planting schedule at wildlife.ca.gov.
