South Bay Fishing Guide

Almaden Reservoir

A secluded hill reservoir bordering Almaden Quicksilver Park — bass and stocked trout.

⚠️ Mercury Advisory: A "Do Not Eat" advisory is in effect for all fish from Almaden Reservoir. Historic Quicksilver mercury mining has elevated mercury throughout the watershed. Catch-and-release only.

About This Fishery

Not to be confused with Almaden Lake Park, Almaden Reservoir sits in the foothills south of San Jose, bordered by the 4,163-acre Almaden Quicksilver County Park. The park's name tells you everything about the mercury history here — the New Almaden mine was one of the most productive quicksilver mines in North America, and that legacy means a hard Do Not Eat advisory on all fish. But the fishing itself can be excellent.

No boats or swimming are permitted, making this a pure bank fishing experience. The shoreline trail gives anglers good access around much of the lake. Largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill are the consistent producers. Rainbow trout are stocked in cooler months by CDFW, adding a welcome seasonal option.

The surrounding park is genuinely beautiful — trails wind through oak woodlands, and wildlife sightings are common. It's a great spot to combine a hike with a few hours of fishing. Expect solitude on weekdays; local neighborhoods fill the park on weekends.
