About Bluegill
Bluegill might be the most underrated fish in the South Bay. They're everywhere, they bite readily, they fight hard for their size on light tackle, and they're the perfect fish for beginners and veterans alike on a slow day. A 10-inch bluegill on a 4-lb line ultralight rod is genuinely exciting.
Bluegill are sunfish — compact, round-bodied, with the distinctive blue-purple opercle flap that gives them their name. They prefer shallow, weedy water and are most active when water temperatures are warm. Every reservoir in this guide holds a healthy bluegill population. Creek banks, dock edges, weed lines, and submerged brush are all prime habitat.
How to Catch Them
Rigs, Lures & Techniques
Piece of nightcrawler on a small hook under a bobber in 2–5 ft of water. The simplest and most effective approach.
Live crickets are a top bluegill bait where permitted. Hook lightly through the collar and let it drift.
1/32 to 1/16 oz jigs in red, orange, or chartreuse. Great for targeting suspended fish and around structure.
Tiny surface poppers are incredibly fun — bluegill will crush them in the shallows at dawn and dusk.
Bluegill are an outstanding fly rod target. Small Woolly Buggers, poppers, and wet flies all work beautifully.
Small wax worms on a tiny hook are irresistible to bluegill. Great choice for kids and light tackle fishing.
By Season
When to Target Them
Bluegill fan out circular beds in shallow gravel in May–June. They're fiercely territorial and easy to catch sight-fishing.
Warm water = active bluegill. Fish early and late near shaded banks, weed edges, and dock structures.
Bluegill remain active and feeding well into fall. Excellent for light tackle fun through October.
Bluegill become lethargic in cold water. Tiny jigs fished very slowly near the bottom still produce.
