About Largemouth Bass
Largemouth bass are the undisputed king of South Bay freshwater fishing. California produces some of the largest largemouth in the world — 21 of the biggest 25 largemouth bass in the US were caught in California — and while our local reservoirs aren't Clear Lake or Castaic, they hold fish that will absolutely surprise you. Seven-pound bass are caught at Calero every spring. Double-digit fish are not unheard of.
Largemouth thrive in the warm, structured reservoirs of Santa Clara County. They are ambush predators, lurking near weed edges, submerged timber, rocky points, and dock pilings. Understanding their seasonal patterns — spawning in spring, retreating deep in summer, feeding aggressively in fall — is the key to consistent success.
How to Catch Them
Rigs, Lures & Techniques
The workhorse. Weedless soft plastic rigged on an offset hook with a bullet weight. Fish it slow in and around heavy cover.
Best for finesse fishing in clear water or when bass are pressured. Keep it still — let the tail quiver do the work.
Small mushroom jig with a finesse worm. Deadly on tough days. Fish it on the bottom with tiny hops.
Buzzbaits, poppers, and walking baits at dawn and dusk. One of the most exciting ways to fish for bass.
Fast retrieve along weed edges in spring and fall. Great search bait for covering water quickly.
A heavy jig flipped into heavy cover or crawled along the bottom near structure. Catches the biggest fish.
By Season
When to Target Them
Bass move shallow to spawn in March–May. Find them in 1–4 ft of water in coves. Aggressive biters — any lure works.
Bass retreat to deeper, cooler water by 9am. Fish the first two hours of daylight or switch to night fishing near the dam.
Cooling water triggers aggressive feeding. Reaction baits — crankbaits, spinnerbaits — parallel to shore are deadly.
Cold water means slow metabolism. Drop shots and finesse rigs near bottom structure. Noon to 3pm is peak.
